Anonymous User wrote:Rob, would it be possible to enhance the display functionality so that BitMeter remembers where it was last positioned on the screen and restarts in that position? Currently the requirement to manually edit the BitMeterSettings.xml file and labouriously experiment by trial and error to get it in the right place is a bit of a pain. Hi Graham,
Bitmeter should remember its position on screen, along with all the other changes you make such as size, colour, graph scale etc - sounds like this isnt working in your case. Do you see any error messages on screen at any point? Do you have Bitmeter running on Windows startup, and staying open until you shut down your PC? If so try closing Bitmeter via the Exit option on the menu, then restarting it again manually - does it remember its position when you do that? Also, check the installation folder for a file called error.log - if you find it then send it to me by email and I'll investigate
thanks
Rob

Rob, BitMeter is started up automatically in the startup sequence and closes down with the machine at Shutdown. I tried your experiment of moving the window and then exiting BitMeter from the system tray and under those circumstances it *does* remember where it was and restarts in that position. So, it looks like your configuration update code is not executed at shutdown with the machine, only at exit from the application. Regards, Graham.

Hi Graham,
Thanks for the extra info and the email - the error messages indicate a problem with the .NET framework installation on your machine, I would recommend reinstalling it. You can get version 1.1 from here http://codebox.no-ip.net/dotnet The config update code should run whenever Bitmeter is closed, including at Windows shutdown. Let me know if a reinstall solves it.

There's actually a post describing this error here http://codebox.no-ip.net/forum/posts/list/8.page with more details on reinstalling the framework

Rob, I'm already on .Net 3.5 SP1. Could this be the problem? Does BitMeter only support the very old 1.1? If that is the case then I'll live with the problem until you support the most recent release of .Net, as nothing else seems not to be working. Regards, Graham.

No, all the versions of .NET framework are backwards-compatible so Bitmeter will work on 1.1 or later. Its possible for different versions of .NET to co-exist on the same machine so you could try installed 1.1 alongside your version and see if that helps (the backward compatibility probably isnt perfect!)

I would too love to be able to set ISP restrictions with daily intervals and Megabyte values rather than gigabytes. My 3G provider is killing me

Rob, in addition to the base .Net Framework 1.1 I also have a security fix to this release installed - KB928366. What will happen if I do a repair or reinstall? Will I have to reapply this fix as well. If I have to uninstall 1.1 to reinstall it, should I remove the fix first? Regards, Graham.

Hi - you can use megabytes on the ISP restriction screen by entering fractional amounts in the gigabyte field (eg 0.1gb=100mb) For daily monitoring you could set a Volume Alert, but you'd need to do this manually each day.

Hi, I dont know I'm afraid - you would hope that Microsoft would update the main .NET installer with security patches but theres no guarantee. I would install the patch again if in doubt.

My ISP has a download limit per rolling 30-day period, so for me I need to see data transfer in the last 30 days. Seeing statistics for the last handful of days, handful of weeks, or current month isn't particularly useful to me. Either I have missed this functionality in the BitMeter settings, or I would like it to be added.

Another thought. My ISP, and I am sure others too, don't count data transferred between certain hours towards the accounts period quota, so perhaps it would be handy to have an option to ignore transferred between configurable hours. Or at least not count it towards the ISP restrictions.

Hi Rob,
Nice work but I too need the ability to exclude LAN traffic.
Thanks,
Geoff

On the subject of monitoring broadband traffic separately from LAN traffic, can I please put in my support for an enhancement to enable traffic filtering by IP address and by IP range? I am still interested in my LAN traffic so would not want to exclude it but I would like to be able to accumulate separate traffic totals for WAN and LAN traffic.
